TIP SHEET FOR JUNE  30th QUEER LIBERATION MARCH AND RALLY

Here is detailed information and coverage tips for 2 important events set for Sunday, June 30th.

If you expect to cover, please email: media@reclaimpridenyc.org

WHAT AND WHY:   On Sunday, June 30th, the Reclaim Pride Coalition will mark the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion with a political, people’s Queer Liberation March from the Stonewall Inn at Sheridan Square, up Sixth Avenue, to a major Rally on the Great Lawn of Central Park.

The Queer Liberation March and Rally celebrates successes over the last half-century while  committing to address the ongoing struggles in the U.S. and throughout the world. We honor the powerful legacy of the Stonewall Rebellion by highlighting the most marginalized members of our communities. The Reclaim Pride Coalition is the NYC-based organizer and is endorsed by over 175 groups in the U.S. and other countries.

NOTE:  The Queer Liberation March and Rally are distinctive events and should not be confused with other Pride events taking place throughout the city that day.  The Queer Liberation March will be a people’s march, with no corporate floats and no police.

The Heritage of Pride Parade emphasizes a large corporate presence and prevents individuals from spontaneously entering their event.

MARCH ROUTE AND GENERAL INFO:

Everyone is welcome to join the  Queer Liberation March at any point. The March is free, legal and safe, with no pre-registration or wristbands required.  March map.

The Queer Liberation March retraces the steps of the original Christopher Street Liberation Day March of 1970. Participants will gather on 7th Ave South, just below Christopher Street, with the front of the March stepping off at 9:30 a.m. sharp. (photo and interview opportunities)

We will march one block up 7th Avenue, turn right on 10th Street, then proceed all the way up 6th Ave., entering Central Park at 59th St., and ending with a large Rally on Central Park's Great Lawn at 1 p.m.

We are recommending that people not able to do the whole March gather at Bryant Park by 11am. The March will pause there to pick up that crowd. (photo and interview opportunities at Bryant Park, with musical entertainment and art installations)

At 59th St. and 6th Ave., as the March enters Central Park, celebrated performance artist Taylor Mac, collaborator Machine Dazzle, and others, will greet Marchers.

There will be two Moments of Silence —one at Noon during the March, one at 2 pm during the Rally. We will remember and honor those we have lost to violence, especially trans women of color, and to HIV/AIDS, racism, sexism and homophobia. (photo opportunities)

THE RALLY: The Rally on the Great Lawn (approx. 84th St.) will feature more than 20 performers and speakers, such as Mx Justin Vivian Bond, Staceyann Chin, Masha Gessen, Kevin Aviance, original members of the Gay Liberation Front, Larry Kramer and members of ACT UP, Marga Gomez, Pamela Sneed, Cecilia Gentili, Blair Imani, Pulse nightclub survivor Keinon Carter, Black Trans Media representatives Sasha Alexander and Olympia Sudan, Amir Ashour, Edafe Okporo, Regan de Loggans, Cindy Wiesner and Lydia X.Z. Brown.  The Rally will run approx. 1pm - 4pm.

On Central Park’s Great Lawn there will be a press stand to the right of the stage with a mult box available.
