Our Commitment to Accessibility

Thank you for checking in… Accessibility has been a top priority for the Coalition since our beginning. To be clear, barriers to access are a primary form of modern day oppression. When the wealth of the nation continues to grow, there are no excuses for lacking among its citizens.

Accessibility Planning

The Reclaim Pride Accessibility team works to support the participation of as many members of our communities as possible in the annual Queer Liberation March, as well as Town Hall meetings, streamed panel discussions, and all other events. To that end, we intend to have available:

  • American Sign Language interpreters both onsite, and on streaming

  • Wheelchair accessible spaces for meetings, and manual wheelchairs to reserve for our siblings who require an alternative to walking the entire March.

  • Reserved seating on an Access Bus for our siblings who require an alternative to walking the entire March.

  • Water & light snacks available along the March route.

  • Opportunities to depart from the March before it ends.

  • Closed captioning for our video meetings, and through the YouTube interface for livestreamed events.

Health Alerts & Resources

The COVID pandemic is hardly over. In fact, to be precise, the Flu pandemic of 1918 is not over; it’s the reason we have still have seasonal flu every year.

We strongly recommend staying updated via the People’s CDC, and subscribing to their monthly “COVID-19 Weather Reports

The federal government has proven over time to be compromised in their ability to keep local municipalities & citizens updated, informed and resourced. Still, as a coalition, we work to evaluate the science and advocate for our communities to stay safe by embracing vaccines, mask usage, social distancing principles, and safer sex practices, among other things.

About our Route planning, for example

The March route will not be barricaded, and participants are welcome to join or depart at any point along the route.

We try to determine routes that are close to 2 miles long. We look for obstacles like cobblestones, construction zones, and hoards of police… and work to avoid them. We seek out routes that have shade during the hot summer days, and try to provide water for participants to hydrate, and masks for our immuno-compromised siblings too. As an example, check out this map of the 2023 route with important landmarks at QLM 2023 Accessibility Map.

We also map out the closest accessible subway stations to the March’s step off and end points — for example Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall (4, 5, & 6) and Chambers St (J). The closest accessible subway station to Washington Square Park is West 4 St-Washington Sq (A, C, D, E, & F). The MTA has created an Accessible Stations Subway Map and maintains an updated list of MTA Accessible Stations. NYRestroom.com maintains a list of public restrooms and allows users to filter for accessibility. We check if for accuracy before we kick off so individuals can make smart=safe choices on the day of the March.

If you have any specific access needs or suggestions you would like us to know about, please email access@reclaimpridenyc.org.
